- Piano
Paul Gulda was born in 1961 in Vienna. He took up playing the piano aged eight. "My first teachers were two Jazzers: Fritz Pauer and Roland Batik. My father, Friedrich Gulda, taught me absolute devotion to music, Leonid Brumberg taught me the basics of the Russian School. Rudolf Serkin gave me the gift of true kindness and support. To total this, better still to exceed this and to pass this one – this is what I consider my calling”, says Gulda.
Since 1982 he performs at international concerts and productions as a soloist, chamber musician, improviser, conductor and composer and draws up literary/musical evenings. He has already composed several pieces of incidental music. On the occasion of the 54th anniversary of the liberation of Mauthausen concentration camp he created "Stimmen im Widerhall. Ein musikalischer Diskurs” ("Echoing voices. A musical discourse"). Furthermore Gulda has created improvisation-performances with Jazz pianist Makoto Ozone, or recently with painter Erdmuthe Scherzer-Klinger.
The concert project "Haydn alla Zingarese" which was created in 1993 in collaboration with Roma musicians will be refreshed on the occasion of the Haydn-year 2009. Paul Gulda has performed with the Vienna Philharmonics under Zubin Mehta, Kurt Masur, Yehudi Menuhin and many others, and with Martha Argerich, Heinrich Schiff, Renaud Capucon, Wolfgang Holzmair, or with the Hagen Quartet. He has already released approximately 20 records. In 2008 the violin sonatas by Brahms with Takumi Kubota were released, and in 2009 the violin works by Szymanowski with Joanna Madroszkiewicz.
Paul Gulda furthermore is a pedagogue high in demand. Since 1998 he regularly holds master classes in a number of countries and between 2001 and 2003 he was visiting professor at the University of Music in Vienna.
He teaches at the Académie musicale de Villecroze in 1998.
